What does Howell Recreation do?

We are the leading provider of youth and adult recreation in the Howell area.  We run/operate two facilities: the Oceola Community Center on Latson Rd. and the Hive Youth & Teen Center on Grand River, just outside of Downtown Howell.  Oceola is home to three indoor multipurpose courts lined for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball.  We also have a fitness room with treadmills, ellipticals, and other state-of-the-art fitness equipment, an indoor walking track, and rooms for community programs and classes.  Oceola is also home to the Howell Senior Center and runs many programs for the 50 & older community including fitness classes, socials, and educational sessions.

The Hive Teen Center is the home of our after-school program for teens.  The Hive is a place where teens can socialize, take classes, explore their artistic talents, play games, and get involved in the community all in a space built specially for them.  We’re proud to offer opportunities for teens to learn life skills like personal finance, cooking, babysitting, as well as programs to foster or continue their creative talents.  The Hive is also home to The Howell Recreation Preschool & Learning Center which runs in the mornings 5 days a week and our Hive Five Camps (including our Summer Day Camp program).

No matter who you are, we aim to make Howell a place where everyone can play, grow, and belong!

We believe that play is for everyone and are proud to offer a variety of community programs for all ages including:

  • Youth and Adult Sports Leagues (Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, & Pickleball).

  • Sports Camps & Clinics (Karate, Tennis, Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball, Pickleball, & more).

  • Weekly Tot Time playdates for young families.

  • Travel programs.

  • Special Events (Daddy/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances, Egg Hunts, Holiday Events, & More).

We are about growing our community in Howell. Whether it’s growing as an individual by learning a new skill or growing together as a community, we’re proud to bring opportunities for people to try new things and learn new skills:

  • Arts & Crafts classes.

  • Life skill classes for youth and teens including personal finance, cooking, babysitting, and other extracurricular activities.

We believe community is important for living a happy and healthy life. That’s why we strive to bring our community together by facilitating spaces for individuals of all ages and abilities to connect, feel healthy, and engage in Recreation:

The Oceola Community Center where people can exercise, socialize, and meet new friends while playing sports, taking fitness classes, or working out.

Social clubs for Seniors like bingo, luncheons, book club, knitting club, and cards and games.

The Hive Youth & Teen Center for kids in 6th-12th grade to socialize, work on homework, and make meaningful change in their community.

Drop-in programs like sports and fitness where people can connect with their neighbors.

Our brand-new Rec on the Go program where we bring fun pop-up Recreation activities directly to our community.

Taking care of outdoor community recreation spaces like soccer fields and playgrounds at Oceola and Genoa Townships and advocating for continued dedication of resources to recreation in the Howell community.
